Another week, another video! :)

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

If you’ve posted a comment in the last five days and it hasn’t appeared, I’m working through the backlog of what Akimset has tentatively classified as spam. I’d warn spammers not to bother (again!) but it wouldn’t do any good. For those out there otherwise posting comments, I hope there

Aside from that, I got by the club on Saturday and played a couple of games. One of them is now immortalized on video here. ( http://www.chessvideos.tv/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6623 ) It is a good object lesson on why pawns and their protection can be a valuable thing in a game.

I’m hoping in this next week to resume updating the blog two or three times a week. Which probably means Murphy’s law will kick in and somehow try to prevent that. But here’s hoping… ;)

New Video – “I hope you relish it as much as I!”

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Since I don’t have to worry about my Blog problems immediately, and I didn’t get over to the club tonight for play, I decided to record a video and upload it to chessvideos.tv.

So here’s the link over to it. ( http://www.chessvideos.tv/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6609&p=50084#p50084 for the link-impaired out there.) Like Tranya in the Star Trek episode The Corbomite Maneuver, it’s just for entertainment and not a “serious chess video.” But making these videos are one way I enjoy my chess, and I hope that watching it will help you to

Vexing Blog Problem

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Tonight I discovered a serious problem with this blog, and darn near lost the whole thing.

I noticed that for the months where I have a lot of posts (for a couple of months I was posting *very* regularly,) that there was no navigation bar. So, someone cruising my Site Archives by month, for example, would only see the first few posts, and no links to see back any further in the month.

So, I tried “fixing” it, which didn’t work. Then I tried upgrading the wp-pagenavi php scripts, without first backing up everything… Oops! I lost the blog and admin access completely for awhile. I mean, if you called up my blog you’d have gotten a blank page for a little over an hour. Files there, just inaccessible.

A little bit of hacking the raw php files (actually deleting the contents of the main CSS and php for the pagnavi…) from my web hosting control, and the Blog is back as is Admin control, but my page navigation is more boned then ever. I’ve got backups of *those* files, but right now they are sitting empty in the install.

(It doesn’t help that I did quite a bit of hacking on the defaults of this theme getting it the way I wanted it. Which is probably how I broke the navs in the first place. A lot of experimentation went into getting this particular WordPress theme the way I wanted it. And while I’m a technogeek and to quote Styx a, “jet-fuel genius who can solve the world’s problems with out even trying…” I nevertheless know what little I do about CSS and php from direct experimentation.)

The point is that I just dug the hole a little deeper, and now need to take away from my other pursuits to try and fix this darn thing. ;) If you are checking my blog and all you get is a blank page, I’m probably trying to fix the problem, as I can devote time to it.

Hopefully you won’t be inconvenienced too much, and you can find other ways besides reading my words to

Enjoy your Chess!

EDIT TO ADD: And I have *no* idea why the Page Navigation now does, in fact, exist. It’s there, and it wasn’t before! If this were a chess game, you’d label this move ?! – doubt and possibly completely unsound and yet it works! Plus my width balooned out more the way I wanted it originally… Pardon the technospeak, but I think actually deleting the CSS page navigation script unscrambled something that I must have modified and broke in the early days.

Sooo….. Just like a ?! move, I’ll have to analyze this and see if there is anything that actually needs fixing, or if by purging files I in fact fixed the original broken problem. After a full and complete backup that I can restore if I get into trouble again. Still, at least I can also try to enjoy my chess as well as troubleshoot, and you can enjoy your chess!!! :D

Directing My First Adult Tournament

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

My leg is still bothering me a little bit (after thinking, foolishly, that it had gone away.) A combination of headache on Monday and then a Tuesday spent catching up on some personal stuff.

So now I’m at Wednesday, and it’s time for a Shameless Plug… In one month I’m going to be TDing my first adult event here in Bloomington. Another TD will be on the computer and I’ll be taking care of the floor.

Exciting! But I’m going to have to knuckle down now to settle some loose threads of the tourney, as well as begin my final review of the rulebook and rules supplements.

So, here’s the details as we’ve posted them at the Illinois Chess Association. (We submitted an online TLA at USCF as well, but I’ve still got to edit it for a couple of typos… :o !)

Good to bad to worse means more chances for Chess Enjoyment!

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Apologies for not updating recently… One thing I like in the blogs I read is for them to be regularly updated. But many things going on and not enough time to sit down and type up an entry.

The good stuff:
Much chess played since the Oglesby tournament – I like that my midgame is sharpening up nicely. I still need work on my endgames, though. At least I haven’t blundered my Queen away since then. ;)

Did computer TDing last Saturday, and a seven year old I’ve played before had his second tournament where he went 5-0…. in the elementary section. (Elementary is 5th-6th graders.) Although he has a lot of work ahead of him (a floor TD told me he seriously blundered at least twice and his opponents didn’t pick up on it,) he’s the sort of player that someday I could well say, “You know, I played him back when he was first starting out…” :)

Sunday was LV’s birthday, and a good time was had by all.

Then things started going worse. Without going into excessive detail, it culminated in my straining (and possibly partially tearing a muscle) in my calf last night. So I’ve been off my feet virtually all of today (and tomorrow… then we’ll see.) If that wasn’t enough, a casserole dish I had on the stovetop after pulling out of the oven exploded. Which caused me to jump back… landing squarely on the leg I injured. A bit of cursing later and Mrs. LV and I cleaned up the mess of tempered glass fragments and micro-slivers – causing her to cut her hand on glass fragments in the process.

[ Edit to add: I did, yesterday morning, head over to Prompt Care and had my leg looked at by a Doctor, who advised me to stay off it/off work. Although I come from a long line of stoic Scandinavian farming stock, as a chess player I like to think of myself as smart enough to get medical help when needed. ;) ]

Sigh.

The silver lining in all this: Chess is still there for me, waiting to be enjoyed. And there’s so many areas to go with… playing online, playing computer, analyzing historic games, logging onto online server and observing others. Bad times equal opportunities to get more enjoyment from Chess than in the good times. So, in the next few days I’m going to work on enjoying my Chess. In the meantime I hope you’ve been able to better

Enjoy your Chess!
